Please Mayor Fung — Have a Heart
Let’s face it—Homelessness is one of the most overwhelming challenges facing our state, our county and our city- Millbrae. Every night, hundreds and even thousands of our unhoused neighbors go to sleep without a place to call home. These include families, seniors and veterans, and they need dignity, privacy, safety, stability, and shelter.
Governor Newsom and the State of California are addressing the homeless crisis through Project HomeKey, a program that helps unhoused residents find a place to call home by converting hotels and motels into permanent homes for the unhoused. Many communities across the state have embraced these plans including two of our
neighboring cities- Redwood City and South San Francisco.
The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors has approved the placement of a Project HomeKey location at the current site of Millbrae’s La Quinta Inn. This facility would be a literal lifesaver by helping our unhoused families and seniors get back on their feet.
Unfortunately, 3 members of the Millbrae City Council are suing the County to stop this important project. If this suit prevails it will not only cost millions in taxpayer dollars and take permanent supportive housing away from 75 households and instead become just another temporary shelter providing less stability, security, and support. Not
only would this hurt the residents of the housing, but ultimately could prevent affordable housing for the unhoused and people escaping domestic violence, veterans, and people with disabilities across the State.
This is where Mayor Fung comes in—As the most reasonable and rational of the three councilmembers supporting the suit he needs to hear from community members and others who care about affordable housing and supporting our unhoused neighbors.
This is where YOU come in by asking Mayor Fung to DROP THE COSTLY AND HEARTLESS LAWSUIT. Shouldn’t our taxpayer dollars be spent addressing the homelessness and affordable housing crisis.
