From All of the Staff at the Housing Leadership Council, The Housing Leadership Council of San Mateo County condemns the recent surge in violent attacks against elderly Asian Americans across the country. As a housing organization, our work aims to undo the racist policies and sentiments that have made quality affordable homes unattainable for marginalized communities, especially black, Indigenous and people of color. It is our duty to support one another and denounce racist rhetoric and actions in our community. We stand in solidarity with the Asian American community. |

HLC is excited to welcome our new Organizer, Ángela Solis, who will focus on housing elements in San Mateo County! A San Mateo resident herself, previously Ángela advocated for expanded Medicare and Medi-Cal coverage for underprivileged clients. As an Organizer, she is excited to continue to build toward a more equitable community on intersectional housing issues. Ángela holds a Bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, and hopes to further her higher learning with a PhD in Education later on. Please join us in welcoming Ángela Solis to the team! |

| Black History Month: Constance Baker Motley |
|
|
|
|
February is Black History Month. In honor of Black History Month, we want to continue to celebrate black excellence and highlight black heroes. Constance Baker Motley was the first black woman to argue a case before the Supreme Court. She was also the first Black woman to serve in the New York State Senate. Motley became a lead trial attorney for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and began arguing desegregation and fair housing cases across the country. She represented Black plaintiffs in public housing cases across the country, she wrote the legal brief for the landmark school desegregation case Brown VS. Board of Education and eventually became the first Black woman appointed to the federal judiciary. Throughout Motley’s life she used her legal experience to represent everyone from Martin Luther King Jr., Freedom Riders, civil rights protestors and won 9 out of 10 cases before the Supreme Court.
