Regional Measure 4 Update

At the request of the Bay Area Housing For All (BAHA) Coalition, your leaders on the Bay Area Housing Finance Authority (BAHFA) Board decided to remove Regional Measure 4 from the November 2024 ballot at a special meeting on the morning of August 14th. While we are nothing short of disappointed by this outcome, it was necessary to preserve the success of a future regional measure and HLC’s long-term goals. Had voters approved the measure, it would have provided a $2.1 billion funding solution to create and preserve affordable homes throughout San Mateo County.

📋Countywide Housing Elements Update 📋

Congratulations to the City of San Mateo on receiving housing element certification🎉

In order to successfully implement its housing element, San Mateo voters now need to pass Measure T, which will allow for greater heights and densities along transit corridors and business areas.

San Mateo County Housing Element Not Yet Certified

On July 5, San Mateo County received a comment letter from HCD recommending additional opportunities to update its housing element. HLC appreciates the County’s preexisting commitments to rezonings, extended ministerial approval, and incentives to address needs of those with disabilities. We look forward to working with the County to implement additional changes that will incentivize more homes.

Millbrae’s Ongoing Lawsuit Against La Quinta Hurts Everyone

Millbrae has appealed its lawsuit after a judge threw out their case attempting to block the conversion of a La Quinta Inn to supportive housing. In a powerful article in the SF Standard, former Redwood City mayor Giselle Hale describes how Millbrae’s lawsuit harms residents of the City and across San Mateo County, potentially costing taxpayers millions in the City’s efforts to block homes for our region’s most vulnerable residents.
