Language Justice Convening 

Calling all housing organizations, service providers and government agencies serving multilingual communities! To advance language justice in the provision of housing services and conversations about the future of housing in our communities, we've partnered with Noemi Gonzalez-Rocha, a Licensed Trainer of The Community Interpreter International, to offer a week-long, in person, community interpreter training program. This 40-hour certificate program will equip housing and service professionals with essential interpreting skills and best practices for promoting equitable access and civic engagement in diverse communities.

 

HLC Endorsement Committee - 1855 S Norfolk St, San Mateo

Join your fellow City of San Mateo community members on Wednesday, August 21st from 6:00 to 7:00 pm for HLC’s Endorsement Committee meeting! We will be discussing a proposal to redevelop the former site of The Fish Market, located at 1855 S Norfolk St in San Mateo., The project will include 260 NEW homes; 26 are slated to be DEEPLY affordable for rent to the most vulnerable members of your community! This is your opportunity to learn directly from the developer at Windy Hill Property Ventures, ask questions, and vote on endorsement!

As a reminder: all are welcome to attend, but only dues paying members from the City of San Mateo may vote.

 

County to Pursue Community Education About Article 34

Last Wednesday, San Mateo County’s Board of Supervisors heard an informational session on a prospective measure to authorize affordable homes pursuant to Article 34 of the California constitution. Over the coming months, the County will pursue an education and listening program with the cities of San Mateo County to develop a measure to be placed on a ballot in a future election year.

Congratulations to the City of Belmont for achieving substantial compliance with their housing element! 🎉

In other news, the state Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) sent Atherton a Notice of Violation–the first step toward legal enforcement against Atherton by the Attorney General for housing element noncompliance. 

 

Survey on AFFH In Housing Elements

Public Advocates is compiling a database of Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing (AFFH) policies in housing elements and seeks partners to help analyze their impact. If you're interested in contributing, please fill out this short, confidential survey to share your input and help strengthen future efforts.

 

How to Advocate for Affordable Homes Workshop

Join us on Thursday, September 5, at 5-6 PM, for an online educational event to gain the information and tools you need to begin advocating for affordable homes- including an increased understanding of San Mateo County’s history, barriers, and current and pressing policy.

 
 

Matthew Desmond Calls Out Millbrae for Opposing Homes

In a New York Times audio op ed, “California’s Homelessness is a Failure of Will,” Princeton sociologist Matthew Desmond calls out the City of Millbrae for opposing County plans to convert a La Quinta Inn to supportive housing for those transitioning out of homelessness.

 

San Mateo County Civics 101 Academy

This free program provides an in-depth look at County programs, services, finances and initiatives. Sessions run from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. every Wednesday, beginning Sep. 4 and ending Oct. 30.

Partnership for the Bay's Future Fellowship

The Partnership for the Bay’s Future Fellowship advances equitable housing solutions across the Bay Area by fostering collaboration among public, private, and nonprofit sectors. San Mateo County Housing Portal- Waitlist Open

The San Mateo County Housing Portal is the County’s one stop shop for finding and applying for affordable housing. Several properties have units currently available or have opened their waitlists for future availability but time is running out!

We are deeply saddened to share the passing of Maria Esther Benitez, a beloved South San Francisco resident and dedicated HLC volunteer, who passed away due to cancer last month.
