| | | | | In 2023, HLC launched a new program to engage a range of San Mateo faith communities in advocacy, activism, and action for housing justice at the city, county, and state level. The response has been heartening. One of the main accomplishments of this program last year was the support of SB4. San Mateo County had more faith communities endorsing the bill than any other county in the state. The SB4 campaign was overwhelmingly successful and we are already seeing YIGBY’s impact in San Mateo County in the first two months of the year. In 2024, one of the faith initiatives is to launch a pro-housing, anti-displacement movement among faith communities to build the voice and power of faith leaders to support policy change by involving 15 committed housing champions from congregations across the county. After targeted outreach and a number of 1-1 conversations, we kicked off the housing champion network in mid-February. We had 19 housing champions present, representing 16 congregations (with additional people committed who could not attend the meeting). The energy in the room was palpable, and Evvy gave a powerful talk on the State of Housing in San Mateo County. It was great to hear the diverse work people are passionate about and engaged in throughout the county! Housing champions will join the housing conversation with other HLC leaders, attend local council meetings to support affordable housing projects, build relationships with others who care about housing, and learn how to influence housing policies and practices. It is time for the faith communities across the county to lend their voices to further fair and affordable housing and to help keep people in their homes. Stay tuned for updates!! Interested?
