Thank you for an Amazing Affordable Housing Month!

Affordable Housing Month has come to a close, and everyone here at HLC would like to thank our community leaders, attendees, and sponsors for helping us achieve another successful series of events!

Our Affordable Housing Month Bus Tour Was a Hit!

For our AHM Main Event, we went on an educational journey through 4 of San Mateo County’s finest housing developments, offering valuable insights into the future of affordable housing in our community. Huge shout out to Alta Housing, Greystar Apartments, Eden Housing, and MidPen!

Here are some highlights from our other events!

Tenant Protections in Rural Communities
First, we discussed the struggles of low-income renters, including farmworkers, in rural areas and emphasized the need for stronger tenant protections in unincorporated areas of San Mateo County!

Implementing Displacement-Focused Housing Preferences through a Digital Affordable Housing Application Portal
In partnership with Exygy, we showcased Berkeley's innovative housing preference policies and the seamless digital application process developed with the Doorway Housing Portal, which facilitates equitable access to housing.

Repairing our Housing System
We also engaged in a discussion with Jenny Schuetz, a Senior Fellow at Brookings Metro and Ruby Bolaria Shifrin of Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to provide practical solutions for making safe, stable, and affordable homes accessible to everyone, regardless of background or income. A huge shout out to EBHO, CZI, and Silicon Valley at Home for making this possible!

Unlocking Affordable Housing - Getting Past Article 34

South City Mayor James Coleman, alongside United Way Bay Area’s Jess Hudson and One San Mateo’s Karyl Eldridge talked about why it is so hard to build affordable homes in our state, how Article 34 has (and is) being used to prevent low-income community members from having a safe and stable place to call home in your community, and how you can help to stop it from being used in bad faith.

Enforcing Housing Element Policies
And last, but now least, our very own Jeremy Levine led an informative session on our crowd-sourced policy tracker. This tool helps community groups and activists leverage state law to promote affordable housing, and tenant protections, and ensure cities adhere to their commitments.

HLC could not have accomplished this without the unwavering support and dedication of our incredible volunteers, sponsors, community partners, and participants who all came together to make Affordable Housing Month 2024 a resounding success. Your hard work and commitment have made a significant impact, allowing us to raise awareness, foster meaningful discussions, and drive forward crucial initiatives that ensure affordable housing for all. HLC thanks you for helping us host such an amazing Affordable Housing Month for 2024!

Thank You to our Amazing AHM 2024 Sponsors

HLC is looking for Temporary, Part-Time Civic Engagement Program Organizers

HLC is looking for 8 temporary, part-time Civic Engagement Program Organizers. If you want to see what it takes to create a community of pro-housing advocates, then this is the perfect opportunity for you!

📋Housing Elements Review📋

On Friday, May 31, HLC unveiled its newest tool to support housing element implementation: Our first-ever housing element policy tracker

The tracker lists every high-impact policy in housing elements across San Mateo County, “high impact” is defined to mean policies with clear deadlines and deliverables that reflect local policy initiatives. We intend for the tracker to help city council members, advocates, and community members to follow all of the pro-housing, pro-tenant policies being implemented across our County.

Policy Updates

Menlo Park - SRI Parkline

Last Tuesday (5/21), Menlo Park City Council leaders held an information session on the SRI Parkline proposal. Because of YOUR engagement and advocacy, the proposal increases the number of homes from 450 to 800–in a location convenient to downtown, public transit, parks, and open space!

Email kchan@hlcsmc.org to learn more and find out how you can get involved!

Redwood City - 505 East Bayshore Townhome Project

On the afternoon of May 16th, leaders on the San Francisco Bay Conservation & Development Commission gave final approval for the 505 East Bayshore Townhome Project in Redwood City! The proposal includes 8 (2-4 bedroom) 100% ownership affordable homes. Giving 8 lower-income families the stability they need to thrive in their community.

 CAL Home Funding Restoration

CalHome, is the ONLY state funding source for the construction and rehabilitation of 100% affordable ownership homes and plays a vital role in addressing California's housing challenges. Unfortunately, it was cut in the Governor's May Budget revision for the upcoming year and will heavily affect our friends at California Habitat for Humanity - leaving thousands of affordable homes for ownership throughout unbuilt.

Let your Governor know that you want these funds restored in the state budget

Tragedy Strikes North Fair Oaks

Last summer developer Mercy Housing began construction of a 179-unit affordable housing project in North Fair Oaks, part of a decade-long plan to redevelop Middlefield Junction into a community hub with services and housing. Sadly, we learned on Monday, June 3, the project suffered a devastating setback when an 8-alarm fire destroyed a significant portion of the built homes. Despite this tragedy, Mercy Housing and the County of San Mateo have remained committed to rebuilding and bringing these much-needed deeply affordable homes to the North Fair Oaks community. HLC supports and appreciates Mercy Housing’s dedication to serving those most vulnerable and keeping North Fair Oaks an affordable place to live for years to come.
