Innovative Tenant Relief

A Message from Karyl Eldridge, Vice Chair of One San Mateo

Hi all,

As you are certainly aware at this point, the COVID crisis has put enormous pressure on lower income members of the community, many of whom have had their hours reduced or are completely without work.  They struggle to feed their families, pay their utility bills, and meet their rent. In an effort to address these hardships, concerned politicians at all levels have worked to develop various forms of relief…[read more].

🎤 🗣️ Public speaking and letting your voice be heard is tough.

We should know. It is also one of the most effective tools we have in our Democracy to let our voice be heard and to speak in favor of equity and inclusion. Have you ever wanted to do the following:

Organizer Alex Melendrez speaking in front of the Belmont City Council in favor of affordable homes!

  • Speak in-front of a crowd (pre/post COVID times) at a council meeting in favor of affordable housing? Or speak to your elected officials in a public virtual meeting?
  • Write an email of support in favor of your housing values?
  • Wanted to know:
    • What makes an effective and compelling public comment/email,
    • How to make a public comment either in-person or virtual for the first time,
    • And what the best “Dos and Don’ts” are?
  • How to tell your story?

There’s nothing more we would want to do than to make it as easy as possible for YOU to speak your truth and tell your story. If you are new to making public comments or need to brush up we will be holding a Public Speaking event!

SAVE THE DATE 📅 Public Speaking Event!

WhenOn Friday, February 12th, 2021 at 6:00pm we will host a fun, happy hour style, public speaking event! It’s right before Valentine's Day weekend! We want you to LOVE your public speaking and public comments ❤️

HowWe are still planning the details. We welcome people at all skill levels! However if you know someone who is interested in speaking at public meetings, to public officials and love housing like we do, let them know we want to help them love their comments. Forward this email to that 1 friend!

Welcome New Members!

On December 18, 2020 the San Mateo County City Selection Committee voted to approve the nominations of Mayor Carlos Romero of East Palo Alto and Vice Mayor Giselle Hale of Redwood City to represent the Peninsula on the ABAG Board.

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome both Mayor Romero and Vice Mayor Hale to their new positions! HLC appreciates your willingness to collaborate with leaders from all over the Bay Area to help solve our regional challenges! 🎉

Regional Housing Needs Allocation (RHNA) Update

Right before the holiday break, the Plan Bay Area 2050 Final Blueprint was released to the public. As a refresher, Methodology 8A has two key components: Factors and Weights for allocating homes by income category (Step 2) and the Baseline Allocation (Step 3). The latter is used to assign each city in our region the number of homes needed to be constructed in the next RHNA cycle; which is based on household growth in the Plan Bay Area 2050 Blueprint.

While the factors and weights that we collectively advocated for in the Methodology 8A were maintained, changes between the Plan Bay Area 2050 Draft and Final Blueprints caused a shift in Very Low Income (VLI) and Low Income (LI) home allocations across the region, disproportionately affecting some jurisdictions over others.

While we are still in support of Methodology 8A, we would like to also advocate for an equity adjustment to ensure that all of our cities in the Bay Area are receiving a proportional share of VLI and LI home allocations.

Action 🤝: Join Committee Meetings

Take action with us on Thursday, January 14 at 10 am; where the Regional Planning Committee of ABAG will meet to discuss and approve any proposed changes.

The ABAG Executive Board will meet on Thursday, January 21 at 4:30 pm to have a final say on the changes.
