Support Serramonte Del Rey TODAY -Tuesday, December 5th!

Join us in backing the groundbreaking Serramonte Del Rey housing project by sending a letter in support of SDR. This initiative aims to construct homes for the community (including 20% affordable housing and set-asides for those with developmental disabilities) all on school land to benefit the district and the community long-term.

The Planning Committee convenes on Tuesday, December 5, at 7:00 pm at Daly City City Hall (333 90th Street Daly City) to review this proposal.

Please sign the letter to show your support, and consider joining us at the meeting to amplify our collective voice!

San Mateo Baywood Historic District

A map of the proposed historic district. All turquoise parcels would be included in the historic district regardless of what the property owners want.

In advance of next Monday’s city council meeting in San Mateo, residents are mobilizing to oppose the Baywood Historic District. During the non-agendized comment portion of the meeting, residents will deliver comments to the council, urging them to issue a formal letter opposing the district.

Neighbors opposing the district have created a petition to urge the city council to formally oppose the historic district. They’ve also created a website for interested residents to learn more. All San Mateo residents are welcome to sign to demonstrate that the community supports preserving real history, not segregation.

Legalize Affordable Homes!

On Tuesday night, the Menlo Park City Council voted to make it easier to put homes (especially affordable homes) in and near downtown Menlo Park!

This would not have been possible without the help of the 150 Menlo Park residents who signed Menlo Together’s petition urging city leadership to upzone downtown!

📋Housing Elements Review📋

Last week, South San Francisco became the third city in San Mateo County to achieve housing element certification! A number of significant policies helped the city achieve compliance, including commitments to pursue:

  • Widespread rezoning for affordable and market-rate homes, allowing up to 120 du/ac in some areas.
  • Publicly owned land for affordable homes
  • Tenant protections to prevent displacement of our county’s most vulnerable residents

Across the Bay Area, more than 50% of cities have now received housing element certification; in San Mateo County, just 3 of our 21 jurisdictions have completed the process. HLC continues to support the efforts of local jurisdictions to achieve compliance with comment letters and policy advice.

Celebrating the Life & Legacy of Supervisor Don Horsley

It is with heavy hearts that we learned of the passing of former County Supervisor and HEART of SMC Board Member Don Horsley on Friday, November 24, 2023. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched as a staunch advocate for housing justice and people with mental health disorders. Last year, at our Housing Leadership Day conference, we were fortunate enough to have Supervisor Horsley join us to give our opening remarks for the event, where he talked about the importance of working together to find solutions to tackle the housing crisis. One of his greatest accomplishments in supporting affordable housing included chairing the committee that passed  Measure K, a ballot measure that provides dedicated funding to affordable homes and emergency services. These funds have allowed for the development of thousands of new affordable homes throughout the County (you can learn more about the impact of Measure K in our ebook). We continue to be inspired by Supervisor Horsley’s words and even more so by his actions to create a more equitable San Mateo County.
