Sign Today to Support Housing in Millbrae

In an attempt to stop a Homekey proposal in the City of Millbrae, three city council members have decided to spend taxpayer money on a lawsuit. If successful, this lawsuit would require a public referendum for ALL low-income homes that use public subsidy, anywhere in the state. This would make building affordable homes in California almost impossible.

Housing Leadership Council calls on Council Members Anders Fung, Gina Papan, and Ann Schneider to withdraw the Article 34 lawsuit and to allow affordable homes in Millbrae and every community in California.

If you believe Millbrae should do its part to contribute to solutions and use public tax dollars to support residents instead of vilifying them, you now have the opportunity to let Mayor Fung know by clicking below to sign our petition.

SMC “Hopeful Horizons” Encampment Ordinance

Last Tuesday, January 23, San Mateo County’s Board of Supervisors voted unanimously to approve the “Hopeful Horizons” ordinance, which creates a process by which the County can clear homeless encampments whenever shelter beds are available. In response to public comment, the Supervisors made several important amendments, including semi-annual auditing, while ignoring others. HLC and our partners will closely monitor the implementation of this ordinance to ensure it has its intended impact.

📋Housing Elements Review📋

HLC’s policy manager, Jeremy Levine, published a new editorial in the San Mateo Daily Journal looking back on housing elements in 2023 and looking forward to what’s coming in 2024.

Though housing elements were technically due for certification by January 1, 2023, only eight cities have received certification from the state so far: Redwood City, Brisbane, Colma, Hillbsorough, Burlingame, South San Francisco, Menlo Park, and, most recently on Friday, January 19, the City of San Mateo. Even after achieving compliance, many jurisdictions will need ongoing local support to implement their policy commitments.
