Protect Public Land for Affordable Homes in South City Housing Element

In the last year, San Mateo County has seen a 20% increase in the homeless population, with the greatest increase among seniors. New affordable homes are being overwhelmed with thousands of qualified applicants. Housing costs continue to skyrocket and housing development has stalled, yet, leaders on South San Francisco’s City Council are considering removing a large publicly owned site intended for affordable homes from its housing element. This site could be affordable homes for seniors with a senior center, if the council is willing.

SSF spent over a year and hundreds of thousands of dollars choosing ideal sites for housing in its housing element. They now need your support to continue their leadership on affordable homes!

HLC Endorses Measure T, San Mateo’s General Plan Update

At their meeting last Wednesday, HLC’s board voted to endorse Measure T, San Mateo’s ballot measure to increase allowable heights and densities in its downtown and along commercial corridors. Though HLC believes Measure T could have done more to promote housing affordability, it represents an important first step toward creating more homes in San Mateo.

HLC Policy Manager Jeremy Levine sent a Letter to the Editor to the San Mateo Daily Journal expressing our support.

Menlo Park City-Owned Parking Lots Moving Forward as Housing

At their August 27 meeting, Menlo Park’s City Council directed staff to pursue the development of new affordable homes on up to three city-owned parking lots. This supports a commitment in the city’s housing element to allow hundreds of affordable homes on its eight city-owned lots downtown.

Builder’s Remedy Project proposed in Moss Beach

Though it has made substantial progress toward pro-housing changes, San Mateo County’s housing element remains out of compliance with state law. In response, a property owner in Moss Beach submitted a Builder’s Remedy proposal to build ten homes on a vacant residential infill lot in a single-family neighborhood. With new state laws streamlining Builder’s Remedy proposals, cities across San Mateo County that lack compliant housing elements are increasingly likely to see smaller-scale development proposals that exceed local zoning rules.
