Acknowledging Juneteenth

Juneteenth is an annual holiday observing the end of slavery in the U.S. and marks the day when news of emancipation reached people in the deepest parts of the former Confederacy in Galveston, Texas. In 2021, it became the first new federal holiday created by Congress in nearly four decades.

HLC believes that its our collective responsibility to build communities where all people, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, ability, sexual orientation, or income, can afford decent stable housing and live in safe healthy communities.

📣CA Housing Accelerator: State budget update📣

Although we expected the final budget to meet the June 15 deadline, lawmakers have decided they need more time to reconcile final budget decisions. They only passed a framework on Monday, which gives them time for further discussions.

This framework includes an increase in affordable housing investments from the Governor's latest proposal. We can expect to get more information on the budget by July 1.

This extension gives us more time to encourage our representatives to take action on housing efforts. Email them a pre-filled letter asking them to budget for more housing using the link below!

📋Housing Elements Review📋

Menlo Park’s housing element public comment period ended last Friday, and this was one to watch! Literally, a lot of people were watching. MidPenn Housing sent one public comment letter focused on policy recommendations, YIMBY Law, Menlo Together, and Peninsula for Everyone partnered on another letter more heavily focused on the site inventory, and, of course, HLC has a letter of our own considering the entire document.

For those keeping track, this is HLC’s sixth housing element letter. We sent one letter to the city of San Mateo’s planning commission and another to their city council, and one letter each for Redwood City, Colma, and Foster City. In the next few weeks, we’ll be working on letters for Woodside, San Bruno, and Portola Valley, which all have drafts currently available for public comment.

With all of these drafts coming out, it can feel impossible to keep track of what’s happening in your city. To help you follow your city’s progress, HLC has put together a spiffy visualization of the timeline for a housing element. This process is the same for all jurisdictions.

Opportunities to support affordable housing across San Mateo County:

✨Housing Leadership Day 2022✨
📣Workshop Proposals📣

We are seeking workshop proposals for our Housing Leadership Day. San Mateo County's annual premier affordable housing conference will take place on Friday, October 21 at CZI Community Space in Redwood City! If you or your organization is interested, please fill out and submit a workshop proposal form by Wednesday, August 31 at 11:59 PM.

We are looking for strong and well-developed proposals that:

  • View housing through the lens of racial and social equity and as a solution to our public health crisis and provide attendees with a connection to local solutions for San Mateo County (ie: case studies, best practices, and actionable next steps)
  • Include a variety of organizations that represent a strong cross-section of the affordable housing field and/or key cross-sector coalitions and grassroots leadership.
  • Have a diverse panel (racial, gender, organizational level, geographic, etc)

What happens at Housing Leadership Day?

For the past 20 years, Housing Leadership Day has provided the space for housers to exchange the knowledge and tools needed to mobilize and ultimately bring more affordable homes to our neighborhoods. Our HLC community has grown, learned, and accomplished so much these past two decades– we are constantly empowered by our communities’ strength and resiliency, especially during difficult times like the ones we are experiencing.  More details: http://hlcsmc.org/events/hld
