Hello housers!

Have you ever noticed that when you say, “good schools,” everyone agrees that all children should have access to good schools. But if you say “affordable housing,” there are sometimes skeptics in the room.

Thanks to our funders, we have FREE access to cutting edge research about how to talk about homes and change the narrative around affordable housing.

Bay Area "Shift the Narrative" initiative

NPH invites you to a 3-part web series that starts September 16, to unveil and share the Bay Area-specific “Seize the Narrative” Playbook, which offers research-driven and field-practiced strategies, tactics, and messages that can seize this powerful moment to drive new narratives for our movement.

Register for the remaining sessions of the 3-part series on Shifting the Narrative.

Low-Income Families and Seniors face Legal Eviction from Foster’s Landing

In 1986, the Community Development Agency of Foster City signed an affordable housing agreement with Foster’s Landing Associates, to reserve 74 units (15%) for below-market-rate homes, where tenants would never have to pay more than 30% of their income for rent. The covenant between Foster City and current owners, Essex, is set to end December 31, 2020 for the 50 families and seniors.

In hindsight 34 years of affordability, does not seem long enough and few would have anticipated the huge impact of a pandemic in 2020. As we face these complex challenges, how we respond in this moment matters. If Essex does not act swiftly in response to the Foster City council and staff’s proposals to prioritize homes for people most in need, when stable housing is proving to be the best option to avoid the pandemic, then it is choosing to displace people for simply increasing their portfolio’s ROI. But, Essex can still play a major role in keeping the 70-odd remaining families and seniors of the Foster’s Landing BMR community safe and housed.

At our HLC April 2020 Happy Hour, several residents of Foster’s Landing BMR community asked for our help. Over the summer we organized with a vocal and active core group, who agreed to be spokespersons for their BMR neighbors. HLC reached out and supplied backstory to Susie Steimle, reporter for Project Home. Here is her segment, featuring the wonderful Ms. Venessa Franklin, Vice-Mayor Sam Hindi and Matt Schwartz, CEO California Housing Partnership.

More Affordable Homes

Update: Endorsed! 338 Homes in South San Francisco

We endorsed 338 homes in South San Francisco! 410 Noor in South San Francisco will provide 34 affordable homes and 304 market-rate homes. They will be a great use of the existing land space. Imagine for a moment, 338 homes for individuals and families, near BART, where an existing defunct movie theater resides. Well these homes will be before the South San Francisco City Council soon. If you want to help create this reality for South San Francisco’s growing community and to welcome these future residents consider emailing the City Council. Need assistance or have questions?
