Recap: BBQ in Our Backyard

Last Thursday night, HLC hosted an outdoor mixer and barbeque between some of our partners and the residents and staff of Willow Housing, an affordable apartment complex that permanently supports formerly unhoused and special needs veterans.

Much like the construction of the site itself, last night was a convention of voices from various spaces and world views. Attendees heard about how meaningful and life changing a housing support system was to the tenants living there. Veterans spoke about overcoming adversities in the form of drug addiction and homelessness and how a safe and secure space saved them from falling further into hardship.

In one of our first COVID-conscious, in person events, we saw firsthand how special it was for the cross sections of our communities to share a meal with one another. In the political housing arenas that often overlook and discount these underprivileged populations, events like these remind us of what we are fighting for everyday. HLC thanks Willow Housing and its kind, resilient tenants for sharing their stories and their evenings with advocates for more homes like these. A Saturday with Habitat for Humanity

This past Saturday, HLC staff volunteered with Habitat for Humanity - Greater San Francisco on the construction site of Geneva Village located in Daly City. The project consists of 6 townhomes (2 homes in the 40-60% AMI range and 4 homes in the 60-80% AMI range), which will be purchased and occupied by 6 families at affordable mortgage rates in early 2022. Staffers had the opportunity to help the construction crew put up fence posts along the backyards of the 6 units. By the end of the day, we successfully installed nearly one dozen 4x4s.

We are grateful to have seen and experienced the outcome of rigorous advocacy and collaboration for more homes in the Bay Area. HLC will continue to find ways to be advocates for the community whether it is in a town hall or a townhome. To be the first to know on how to get involved in our future events, keep an eye out for upcoming invitations.

What is the mandated ratio of parking spaces to alleys at a bowling alley in San Mateo County? (Answer: 3 to 1)
